Silent reading lets the brain skip steps. Speaking forces every step into words. If you cannot say the next line, you do not yet own the idea — even if the page looked familiar.

The two-minute speak-through

1. Solve a question on paper as usual.
2. Cover your working.
3. Explain the solution out loud as if teaching a classmate who missed the lesson.
4. Whenever you hesitate or say “and then you just…”, stop. That is the gap.

Example (simple algebra)

Question: Solve 3x + 5 = 20.

Weak speak-through: “You move the five and divide.”

Clear speak-through: “Subtract five from both sides so the left side is only about x. That gives 3x = 15. Then divide both sides by three. x equals five. Check: three times five is fifteen, plus five is twenty.”

The second version exposes whether you understand balance of equations or only a memorised sequence of button presses.

Why this helps exams

Many papers award method marks for clear reasoning. Students who practise speaking steps tend to write clearer intermediate lines. The habit also reduces the “I knew it at home” feeling after a test.

Parents supporting learners with home tuition in F-7 Islamabad can end a session with one spoken solution. It is a fast diagnostic that needs no extra materials.

Rule

If the explanation needs the worked answer open beside you, you are still reading, not teaching. Close it and try again.
