Copying a definition from the textbook into a notebook feels like study. In the exam, definitions must be produced from memory and often applied to an example. A short test separates real understanding from familiar wording.

The four-check test

1. Say it simply: Rewrite the definition in everyday words without looking.
2. Give an example: Name one real object or situation where it applies.
3. Give a non-example: Name something that looks related but does not fit.
4. Link a formula or unit (if relevant): What is measured, and in what unit?

Example: density

• Simple: how much mass is packed into a certain amount of space.
• Example: a steel spoon feels heavier than a similar-sized plastic spoon.
• Non-example: colour — two objects can look different and still have the same density.
• Link: density = mass ÷ volume; often kg/m³ or g/cm³.

If any of the four checks fails, the definition is not ready for exam use. Study that gap, not the whole chapter again.

This test works for photosynthesis, current, oxidation, and many other terms. Learners using home tuition in F-12 Islamabad can run the four checks at the end of each topic so definitions become usable tools, not memorised sentences.
