A large share of marks lost in mathematics are not lost because the student cannot calculate. They are lost because the student solves a slightly different problem from the one that was written.

A typical trap

Question: “A shop reduces the price of a bag from Rs 2,400 by 15%. Then it adds a delivery charge of Rs 120. What does the customer pay?”

A hurried student multiplies 2,400 by 0.15, gets 360, and writes 360 as the answer — forgetting both the reduced price and the delivery charge. The arithmetic was fine. The reading was not.

The three-line method

Before any calculation, write three short lines:

• Given: original price = 2400; discount = 15%; delivery = 120
• Find: final amount the customer pays
• Plan: discount amount → reduced price → add delivery

Only after those three lines do you calculate:

Discount = 0.15 × 2400 = 360
Reduced price = 2400 − 360 = 2040
Final payment = 2040 + 120 = 2160

The three lines force you to separate story from strategy. They also make it obvious if you are about to answer the wrong question.

Words that often change the meaning

Watch for: at least, at most, difference, remaining, each, altogether, per hour, after discount. Underline them. One missed word can flip the entire method.

In home tuition sessions, a useful exercise is to solve only the reading step for five questions — no arithmetic allowed until Given / Find / Plan are written. Students in areas such as G-7 Islamabad who practise this habit usually cut “silly mistakes” sharply within a few weeks, whether they use a home tutor in G-7 or study independently.
