A variable is a named place in memory that holds a value. The name is the label; the content can change while the label stays the same.

Common misunderstandings

• The name is not the value — score is the box; 85 is what is inside today
• Assigning a = b copies the value of b into a (for simple types); it does not permanently link the two names
• Types matter: storing text in a numeric variable causes errors or unexpected conversion

Trace a short program on paper: write the variable names as boxes and update the contents line by line.
